1. Who We Are

Novarum Scholar ("we," "our," or "us") operates the academic research digest service available at novarumscholar.com. We are committed to protecting your personal information and being transparent about how we use it.

2. Information We Collect

Information you provide:

  • Name and email address (required to create an account)
  • Research keywords you choose to track
  • Delivery schedule preferences
  • Payment information (processed securely by Stripe — we never store card details)
  • Invite codes used at signup

Information collected automatically:

  • Records of articles we have sent you (to prevent duplicates)
  • Delivery logs (whether emails were successfully sent)
  • Account activity (subscription tier, status, created date)

We do not use tracking pixels, third-party analytics, or advertising cookies.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information solely to provide the Novarum Scholar service:

  • To fetch and deliver academic articles matching your keywords
  • To generate AI-written summaries of those articles
  • To send your digest emails on your chosen schedule
  • To process subscription payments via Stripe
  • To respond to support inquiries
  • To send service announcements (e.g. new features, policy changes)

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes. Ever.

4. AI Processing

Novarum Scholar uses Claude (Anthropic) to generate plain-language summaries of academic articles. Article titles and abstracts are sent to Anthropic's API for this purpose. Your name, email, and personal details are never sent to Anthropic.

Summaries are cached to reduce unnecessary API calls. Cached data is stored on our servers and is not shared with third parties.

5. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate Novarum Scholar:

  • Resend — email delivery. Your name and email address are shared with Resend to send your digest. Resend Privacy Policy
  • Stripe — payment processing. Card details are handled entirely by Stripe and never stored by us. Stripe Privacy Policy
  • Anthropic (Claude) — AI summaries. Article content only; no personal data. Anthropic Privacy Policy
  • Render — hosting infrastructure. Your data is processed and stored on Render's servers located in the United States (Oregon). Render maintains SOC 2 Type II compliance. By using Novarum Scholar, you consent to the transfer and processing of your personal information in the United States. Render Privacy Policy

6. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you cancel your subscription:

  • Your account is marked inactive but data is retained for 90 days
  • After 90 days, your personal data is deleted from our systems
  • You may request immediate deletion at any time by emailing info@novarumscholar.com

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
  • Correction — update your name, email, or preferences at any time via your account page
  • Deletion — request deletion of your account and all associated data
  • Portability — request your data in a machine-readable format
  • Opt-out — cancel your subscription and stop receiving emails at any time

To exercise any of these rights, email info@novarumscholar.com. We will respond within 30 days.

8. Security

We take reasonable technical measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure credential storage, and restricted access to production systems. However, no internet transmission is 100% secure. We encourage you to use a strong, unique password and contact us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.

9. Breach Notification

In the event of a data breach that affects your personal information, Novarum Scholar will notify affected users within 72 hours of becoming aware of the breach, as required under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and Quebec's Law 25.

What constitutes a breach: Unauthorized access to, use, disclosure, or loss of personal information that poses a real risk of significant harm to affected individuals.

What we will communicate: The nature of the breach, the type of personal information involved, the steps we have taken or will take to address it, and recommended steps you can take to protect yourself.

How we will notify you: By email to the address associated with your account. If email cannot be used, we will post a prominent notice at novarumscholar.com. We will also report qualifying breaches to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as required by law.

If you suspect unauthorized access to your account, please contact us immediately at info@novarumscholar.com.

10. Children

Novarum Scholar is not directed at individuals under 18 years of age. By creating an account, you represent that you are at least 18 years old. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for material changes, notify subscribers by email. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

12. Governing Law

This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of Ontario, Canada, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes relating to this policy shall be resolved in the courts of Ontario, Canada, consistent with our Terms of Service.
